Polestar unveils 5G charging capabilities, capable of charging from 10-80% in just ten minutes

Polestar is showcasing the charging capabilities of its upcoming Polestar 5 sports sedan using StoreDot’s Extreme Fast Charging (XFC) technology. This is the first EV trial using ultra-fast charging technology, and the tests are quite promising.

The Polestar 5, positioned as the fifth model in Geely’s EV portfolio, follows the Precept concept, and Polestar is one of the first automakers to actually translate its concepts into production vehicles.

Production of the Polestar 5 prototype version began in late 2021, featuring side doors and a smart zone grille fitted with multiple sensors for the EV’s ADAS. In July 2023, a secret prototype of the 5 was publicly displayed at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, boasting 884 horsepower and Polestar’s 800V architecture that enables ultra-fast charging speeds.

By November 2023 it was revealed that EV battery specialist StoreDot will be testing its new 100in5 battery technology in the Polestar 5, enabling the 4-door GT to charge 10-100 miles in just 5 minutes.

These fast-charging cells form the center of StoreDot’s I-BEAM XFC concept design, which is aimed at mass production by the end of this year. However, even before the Polestar 5 and fast-charging architecture hit the market, both Polestar and StoreDot have been demonstrating its capabilities, which have been quite impressive.

The Polestar 5 prototype has crossed the 370-kilowatt charging rate barrier. And according to Polestar, the first validation prototypes of 5G have successfully demonstrated the promised charging rates enabled by StoreDot’s XFC technology, charging from 10-80% in just ten minutes. The companies shared that the 5 maintained a consistent charge rate throughout the session, starting at 310kWh and reaching up to 370kWh.

Compared to the current market, these are some of the highest charging rates achieved by BEVs, which will offer exciting possibilities for the future and the first where drivers can park, similar to stopping at a gas station for ICE vehicles, to recharge. After that they come back on the road again.

Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath shared a sentiment consistent with this development, stressing the need to address EV charging concerns for longer trips, where drivers can spend less time in charging stations and less time on the road. The Polestar 5 prototype notably uses a diminutive 77 kWh pack, which gets a boost in charging speeds with StoreDot’s silicon-dominant cells. However, the automaker suggests that the battery pack capacity could be increased to at least 100 kWh, allowing the BEV to achieve 200 miles of range in a 10-minute charge.

With the Precept Polestar 5 being finalized, the automaker aims to reach the market in 2024. Meanwhile, their current focus is on the two SUVs that came before the GT – the Polestar 3 and 4. These cells have comparable energy density to the nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) lithium-ion batteries most commonly used in the EV industry. XFC cells, which are still in the practical development stage, play a structural role in the battery pack, optimizing thermal management without adding extra weight.
